Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DogWatch Cat Fence?
A ‘Cat Fence’ is the same DogWatch Hidden Fence that is used for dogs. We just call it a Cat Fence when we are using it for cats! Actually, the Hidden Fence can be used for both cats and dogs at the same time! The Hidden Fence uses an electronic FM radio signal to keep your pet in a designated containment area, such as a yard or specific areas in your house; or out of an area, such as a swimming pool or garden, etc. You can use the same fence collar with our Indoor Boundaries inside your home to keep your pet off a couch, out of a room or away from a kitchen counter.
How does the hidden fence work?
A hidden wire, buried underground, carries the harmless, low level FM radio signal around the containment area. Your pet wears a receiver on a collar that picks up the radio signal and emits a mild stimulation (also called a correction) if it gets too close to the boundary. Using visual flags and an audible signal (or vibration), your pet is trained to recognize where the boundary is. After training, it is unusual for pets to receive the correction as they know to avoid the boundary area. With consistent boundaries and good training, pets can play happily in their yard knowing where they should and shouldn’t go.
With an indoor containment fence, the hidden wire runs around your couch or other containment area and is invisible to the eye. We also have “wireless” indoor units that do not require placement of a boundary wire! Ask your local Dealer to show you the options.
Does the hidden fence work for outdoor cats?
Yes. We have successfully trained many cats to use outdoor hidden fences. Because cats can climb trees (etc.), your DogWatch Dealer will work with you to establish an appropriate plan for your outdoor fence. The fence configuration may need to be a little different than a fence that is only for dogs. Training a cat to use the fence is also a little different than training a dog to use the fence.
How does my cat learn where the boundary is?
Your cat is trained by a DogWatch Dealer and learns the containment area through voice commands, audible (or vibration) warning signals from the receiver collar and visual flags that are set inside the hidden fence. After initial training with the Dealer, your pet goes through a training session with you for a few minutes each day for about two weeks. Your Dealer will develop a plan to meet the specific training needs of your cat(s).
With training, your pet remembers the placement of the flags and is taught to stay within the containment area. During the training period, flags are slowly taken away. If your cat gets too close to the boundary, he’ll hear a warning sound (or feel a vibration) that alerts him to stop. If your cat continues beyond the warning zone, he will receive a mild correction. After training, most pets stop before receiving the correction.

How old does my cat need to be to be ready for a pet containment system?
All cats are different. Even within the same breed some cats may mature earlier than others. When your DogWatch Dealer meets with you, he or she will evaluate your cat and make a recommendation as to when training should begin.
Will the hidden fence work for more than one pet?
Yes. There is no limit to the number of cats or dogs (or both!) our hidden pet fencing can protect at one time.
